1. Summary
Tasmania is south of Australia. Its capital is Hobart. The original inhabitants of the island are the Aborigines. The Tasmanians are the only people on earth whose race is totally extinct. It happened in the 19th century. The colonisation of Tasmania began as early as 1642 when the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman landed there and named it Van Diemen’s Land after his governor. In 1855 Van Diemen’s Land became Tasmania. In 1770 Captain Cook explored Australia and 7 years later, the British landed on the island. They were mostly convicts and settlers and their number amounted to 65,000. Even though the British government hoped to see harmonious relationships between the settlers and the native people, and to extend the protection of British law to the Aborigines, troubles soon began.
